How to have a web presence

You may ask...
"I would like to get my own page on the
Web, how do I go about it?"
Well, I just did this (you're looking at it), and in a nutshell you need:
- An internet provider, about $30/month,
maybe another $30 one-time set-up charge)
providing a Slip / PPP connection and space on their server for your
home-page files. There is a large list of internet providers at:
http://www.cybertoday.com.
And another at:
The List.
- A Mac or PC. (well, or Unix box too I guess. I used a Mac)
- A bunch of shareware & commercial software
development tools, maybe you can
get by with only Netscape for both your FTP & browseing needs, not sure.
You need software to:
-
Browse the net: Mosaic or Netscape
-
FTP: Anarchie on the Mac works real well.
-
Manipulate images: (Photoshop is nice but may be over-kill, but would do.)
Clip2gif
(download now) can be useful for file conversions.
-
Edit HTML: HTML is the "language" web pages are written in. You
may be able to write in Word (or similar) and then export to HTML with a
utility. I've been using BB EditLite (again on the Mac) with extensions.
-
TCP connections: On the Mac you need Mac TCP, comes with
system 7.5, is available for 7.0. The PC needs Trumpet dialer oe similar.
Your internet provider should either provide this or let you know how to get it.
- A book on HTML (I used
"Creating Cool Web Pages with HTML", by Dave Taylor) as a starting text.
- A modem - 14.4kbaud minimum, 28.8 is better, ISDN is even
better, now we're talking a bit of money.... Get a recomendation from your
internet provider - they'll know what works with their modems.
- Some patience - it don't come real easy, but it sure is fun.
Good luck!! and above all, Have Fun!
